Paper topic choice and REMARK repo setup

If you are auditing the class: You can choose an existing ballpark paper as the point of origin for the class paper. Or, if you really want to save time, you can take an existing REMARK and upgrade it to the top tier of quality (see the description in the REMARK repo of the different tiers). We do not have many top-tier REMARKs. (You can use an AI to ask what would be required to upgrade any existing REMARK to top-tier status.) The principal thing I will want you to do that is above-and-beyond the requirements of a regular REMARK is that I’ll want you to use the existing HAFiscal template for the LaTeX framework for the scaffolding of the paper.

If you’re taking the class for credit, you have two options:

  1. Find options for 2 or 3 papers that do not yet have a REMARK
    • Start by making ballparks for each of them for the next class.
    • You might want to try the trick I showed you about how to use last class’s assignment to autogenerate the ballpark.
    • The first step will be to generate the self.bib file that contains a reference to the paper.
    • The name you should use for the ballpark is whatever is the citekey that PaperPile gives to the paper; e.g. if it starts with @article{Lucas1978trees}, your ballpark would be named Lucas1978trees.
  2. Write a new paper of your own. (This could be your 2nd year paper.)
    • Use the HAFiscal template as the starting point.
    • Give both the repo name and the main .tex filename a name that begins with your GitHub ID and ends with 606 (e.g. llorracc606).
    • Begin the process of hollowing out the content of your clone of the HAFiscal paper. Mandatory: replace the existing abstract from HAFiscal with your own abstract. You should also sketch an introduction and conclusion. For the other sections of the content of the HAFiscal paper, you should leave in place at least one example in which a figure from HAFiscal is imported; same thing for a table, and for an equation.

Set up your REMARK repo (where applicable): Create a new repo from HAFiscal-Public using GitHub’s “Use this template” button. Naming depends on your path:

Strip most content from the relevant HAFiscal document but keep every section. Leave at least one figure, one appendix, one table, and one equation.
